Exclusive Interview with Calvin's Custom on Kickstarter Project: 1/6 MOTOPSYCLE: mGT, BORGHEAD & GUNRUNNER by Alex @ Toy Haven with Calvin @ Calvin's Custom Alex: Congratulations on launching the Kickstarter project! What is it like to lead this one-year project?
Calvin: Thanks, Alex! Time flies by … it's like yesterday when I talked to Mr. Bryan Lo from ACI Toys and SEVEN Toys about the custom bikes. I would like to thank him once again for inviting me to present my custom bicycles, without which this project would never have come about.

It was an incredible experience to work with GATE TOYS. They totally supported me and gave me 100% creative freedom in the design and development process. Mr. Michael Zhu, co-founder of GATE TOYS, told me to do whatever I want and to be worried about production technology. It felt like working on a movie with an unlimited budget, although the time was limited when we were preparing for CICF in October 2017. Nevertheless, we managed to produce prototypes of versions 1/6 and 1/18 for the show. Click on the image for a larger and better view 🙂
Special thanks go to Luka Zou from Figure Hobby Club in Taiwan and Ethan Chaing from Studio Sundowners, one of the MOTOPSYCLE has it to the Taipei Toys Festival, an annual Exhibition, made for original design toys in Taiwan.

Alex: It's great to have so many friends throughout the process. What about the Kickstarter campaign? I can see that it took a lot of preparation. It looks very well planned and executed.
Calvin: Prior to my life as a toy guy, coming from a corporate communications and brand management background, presentation has always been important to me professionally, and by that I mean not just photography and artwork, but consistency in looks and feel, as well as the narration of the project. Starting with the naming of the project, the design of the rewards, to the subsequent continuous presentation of promotional material after the start of the project, each step was thoroughly thought through before being executed.
The Kickstarter project has indeed gone beyond my abilities as a designer and customizer, and challenged my experience in another field. Luckily, with the help of my good friend John Mccormick of Green Wolf Gear, who has successfully helped Dorgmal Snow, a British customizer friend of mine, start a successful Kickstarter last year, I was able to achieve the project goal and rewards to configure very insightful leadership. That helped a lot!
Alex: Going to the products: Starting with the MOTOPSYCLE, can you tell us more about the design, and why a motorcycle instead of a full action figure?
Calvin: Sure! Well, in terms of creativity, for those who have been following my work over the years, I'm known for doing the obvious, but with a twist, like Predator versions of Hellboy and Blade, Hellgal (female version of Hellboy) or Teen Bat and heavily armored old Batman. With MOTOPSYCLE I wanted to build a gunboat with heavy artillery on two wheels, which was reconciled with the themes of skull and skeleton and is suitable for post-apocalyptic situations.
A fan of mine, Kevin Hall, has completely rewritten it by calling it "Terminator x Mad Max".
It was not really necessary by design. Although many motorcycles have been made, American and Japanese, no one has what I'm looking for, as mentioned above. Ghost Riders Hell Bike came close, but without weapons on it, I decided to create my own. And I am glad that many collectors share the same need. When it comes to mass production, although this time it will be a very small series, about 100 pieces worldwide, I think it is still critical that I produce what collectors want, not just what I like.
Many people have asked me why I did not choose to publish a full character as my first Kickstarter project, or why the project does not come with a full number. As I see it, there are so many characters every month, and the market is flooded with licensed, unlicensed and original design characters from various genres. Instead of entering, I look for a niche that has yet been intervened in, a need that has been fulfilled, the obvious, but with a twist: P
Alex: I see, well thought out, in fact, and that brings us to the BORGHEAD and GUNRUNNER weapon sets. Seems like you have plans, or at least you want one, no, even though you're not releasing a full action character?
Calvin: The BORGHEAD and GUNRUNNER weapon kits were created for two reasons, one is customizer thinking, the other a practical kick starter.
As a customizer I feel excited and sad at the same time when I see how the hobby has grown. With so many products released so fast these days, collectors no longer have the time to enjoy a character like they used to. I have the feeling that there are just too many characters to pre-order and unpack, take pictures and share. Today's ass-after pieces are being launched or sold to support the hobby of tomorrow. The figures are not appreciated enough for the art that flowed into them.
The idea of a cyborg headsculpt standalone and weapon set is to deposit collections that are probably best suited for military action figures that started the hobby, a second life. I thought, all Navy Seals, SAS, SDU … Special Ops numbers we've collected over the years, instead of eating dust on the shelf, I would very much like to offer something that could motivate collectors to bring them out and shine Once again for at least another time to fight with some current futuristic military cyborg releases or with the latest superhero squadron.
It is unlikely that I will produce a full action character in the near future, at least not in an Over But one thing is for sure: As soon as this MOTOPSYCLE: mGT project is successfully completed, GATE TOYS and I will have cyborg weapons in 2018 , Hands and armor in the camp to help collectors build their own cyborgs.
The more Practical Reason for Creating the BORGHEAD and GUNRUNNER Weapon Sets was that I know that not everyone is in a motorcycle, and certainly not everyone has the budget for it. To help us reach our goal, these items will serve as a better place for collectors to contribute to the project so that it ultimately achieves its goal.
Alex: I like the idea of a SECOND LIFE for deferred action figures, very like Toy Story! Now, when we talk about options, can you tell us a little bit more about the rewards, especially why so many different versions of the MOTOPSYCLE? Probably quite difficult for those who have problems making decisions, lol!
Calvin: Lol! Yeah, I think Toy Story talks to all of us toy lovers, in other words: P On the options, yes, I intended to have different versions from day one. In essence, the design is the same for bike, headsculpt and weapons. The reasons for the different colors are also back to the needs, since different collectors of different themes need different colors for the bikes, therefore, the more common for most action figures Black version From superheroes to movie characters Then there are the military versions for military collectors. Also the silver and T version would go well with sci-fi characters.
Since this is an extremely limited series production, with which I deal personally with painting and weathering, I have greater flexibility in the offers and thus a wider range of needs among collectors. Also, customizer customization think, I love collectors offer as many options as possible, so that sets the MOTOPSYCLE or the BORGHEAD or the GUNRUNNER weapon, I hope that they can find a variety of uses for them, not just a one-off Unpack> Take pictures to the shelf or showcase experience.
Alex: Excellent! Are there other plans for mass production besides the already mentioned cyborg accessories that you can share with us?
Calvin: Yes, indeed. The prototypes of the 1:18 version of this project have already been developed. As I have many customizers and collectors friends who collect 1/18 scale, as well as the fans of G.I. Joe, Boss Fight Studio, Marauder Task Force and Acid Rain, so as soon as this 1/6 project is successfully completed, we will release the 1/18 version on Kickstarter in Q1 2018. And for every 1/18 collector 26USD "Fire Support" in the current 1/6 Kickstarter project, special offer will be offered later in the 1/18 Kickstarter project.
For the 1/6. I am also talking to some good friends of mine in the industry. There could be some crossover projects with several well-known brands next year.
Alex: Sounds exciting! Can not wait !!! Last, any words for the readers of Toy Haven?
Calvin: Thanks Alex. Yes, the goal of the Kickstarter project is the actual production costs we need to initiate production, and every SHARE and SUPPORT is critical to achieving that goal. Since it is Christmas time, and to thank you and your readers for taking the time and interests in the project, GATE TOYS and I would like to make a special offer to all TOY HAVEN readers:
